This is a quote from the late Fred Picker, one of my early photographic influences. Ultimately what I point the camera at is the most important choice I make as a photographer. I don’t accidentally show up at a great shot and decide to fire the shutter. It takes planning and effort to get in the position to make the photograph. But, once there sometimes it is a waiting game, and sometimes it is dumb luck that magic happens. There is no formula for “magic” but I can increase the chances of it happening by careful planning, patience and persistence. When planning and luck intersect all that remains for the photographer to do is “fire the shutter”.
